presents Re-Discovering Mary Magdalene

Strong and independent women often feel there is no place for them at the table of western religion. What would it mean to our culture if Mary Magdalene emerged as a model of courage, wisdom and partnership? Who was Mary Magdalene? In 600 A.D., Pope Gregory labeled her a penitent prostitute. Yet there are no direct references in the New Testament to confirm this labeling. The Christian Gospels do tell us however, that she was permitted to perform the anointing of Jesus Christ, a task traditionally reserved for the senior priestess in the Isis tradition. And perhaps, most importantly, all four gospels agree that she was the first to witness the resurrection. Why should she not be most remembered as the Apostle of the Apostles (which she was called in other first-century texts), instead of penitent prostitute. The Gnostic Texts, along with other first-century literature, reveal another side to this powerful, mysterious woman. This film incorporates excerpts from the theatrical production "My Magdalene" along with interviews and footage of the sacred sites in Europe and the Middle East. Take a journey of Remembrance, to the roots of the Sacred Feminine in western culture. Playwrights and partners, Laura-Lea Cannon and David Tresemer, Ph.D. have followed the enigmatic trail of Mary Magdalene for years, traveling throughout Israel as well as through France. They reviewed great art of the ages to see how others saw her; read as many books as they could find; asked each other many questions, exploring their own perceptions and meditated and prayed for guidance and insight. This film is a compilation of their inspiration and intuitive insights. (c) 2001 produced by CANCOM |

“I found the video on Mary Magdalene thought-provoking. It was very interesting to see the land where she lived. I enjoyed watching so many different people comment on her life, especially the Methodist minister, since it demonstrated the breadth of her appeal." -- Laine Gerritsen “I have watched Re-Discovering Mary Magdalene several times, and each time, my heart swells as it resonates with the inner wisdom and validation of "her-story." Re-examining the roots of Christianity, and the role women held in that transition, nurtures my spirit with the knowledge that women like Mary Magdalene, kept passing the torch of the Divine Feminine, even when her light at times was dimmed by many." -- Mariza Vazquez “This video began an inquiry into myself to some of the questions that did not have words yet. It gave me a sense of hope that many things are possible and that what we learn in our school texts as a child is not end all. It encouraged me to wonder, dream and ask." -- Rebecca Beacher |
