What is a ceremony?

A time to stop the buzz, flash, panic, rush, and race of modern life.  To acknowledge that something extra-ordinary has occurred or is occurring -- from personal passages such as birth, marriage, death, job change, publication of a book (see Ceremonies of Sacred Living) to celestial passages within which we live our lives (see Sun and Moon) or a combination of these.

Ceremonies of Sun and Moon

Every spiritual and religious tradition acknowledges the potency of the great bodies of Sun and Moon in our lives. We explain it in Star Wisdom 101 and 202 (free classes to acquaint you with the grand context – see more about them at the Star Wisdom page).

Briefly, the Moon ceremonies have to do with those times that the Moon aligns with the Earth and Sun, that is, Full Moon and New Moon.  For the Western mind, the hypothesis is that there is a discernible effect and opportunity then – and we invite you to come test that hypothesis through your own experience.

The Sun passages are clearest at:

  • the markers of the seasons – longest day (Summer Solstice), shortest day (Winter Solstice), and equal day/night (Equinoxes of Spring and Autumn).
  • The rising of the Sun over the horizon – observed publicly at StarHouse at Easter morning sunrise dance and at Winter Solstice sunrise.

Living a Ceremonial Life

We have found that when we make ourselves available to listen to the seasons, to the passages of day and night, to the celestial alignments, then we find a subtle richness and power permeating all of Nature – and ourselves. To make room for that special feeling, we create spaces through ceremony, that is, the conscious and aware leaving of a space for a new experience.  At the Jewish festival of Passover, an empty chair is left for Elijah, and special treatment to the person who ‘just happened to drop by’ that day and that evening – becoming, in a sense, a spokesperson for the great prophet Elijah.  Similarly, in a ceremony, we create spaces for personal experience of a different order.  Leave your cell phones behind, let your daily schedules melt away around the edges – bring openness of mind and heart, and then see what you experience.  It may be as subtle as a hint of rose blossom.  It may be as strong as a lightning strike insight about your life.  These are the harvests of ceremony for you personally.
